Kasparov-Shirov, Horgen 1994

The thirteenth chapter presents a positional masterpiece, which features the 13th World Champion. In the strong tournament in Horgen, Switzerland 1994, Garry Kasparov produced a game that left his opponent speechless. Alexey Shirov, who was the third player in the world rankings at that time, and finished second in Horgen after Kasparov, could not understand where he went wrong. All Black's moves seemed logical, nevertheless he lost without a single chance.

The concept of the relative value of pieces shown by Kasparov in this game was conducted in the best traditions of Petrosian (see the last chapter). It has always been known that Black's main strategical drawback in the Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defence is the weakness of square d5. Kasparov went further and managed to combine the domination of White's knight on d5 with other factors in the position. His new idea in the opening showed once again that every position deserves a special approach, based on the strategic factors of the concrete position.
