Larsen-Spassky, USSR-vs. Rest of the World, Belgrade 1970
In the spring of 1970, a highly mediatised match - USSR vs. the Rest of the World was organized in Belgrade. Literally all the strongest players in the world were present in the teams, which were to face each other four times.
Boris Spassky and Bent Larsen were leading their mighty teams (Fischer played on the second board). Having drawn the first game after a very exciting battle, the second game of the leaders turned out into a disaster for Larsen. To quote Dr. Tarrasch: "It is not enough to be a good player, one must also play well". For this game, it means that the strategic principles of the opening should not be ignored - even by the strongest players in the world. The Danish Grandmaster could have hardly imagined that he would end up in deep trouble with the white pieces after just 10 moves. The reigning World Champion Boris Spassky quickly developed all the pieces and punished White with one of the most spectacular combinations ever.
