Short-Timman, 1991

Short-Timman, Tilburg 1991

Between the years 1977 and 1994. strong annual tournaments sponsored by the insurance company Interpolis were held in Tilburg, Netherlands. The 15th edition of the Interpolis tournament from 1991 was a double round robin, featuring eight world class Grandmasters. The competition was dominated by Garry Kasparov, the second spot was occupied by Nigel Short, who "was lucky enough to win a game that produced perhaps the most recognisable diagrams of the modern age" (Svidler). In Short-Timman the English Grandmaster convincingly outplayed his opponent after the opening, reaching a complete domination in the middlegame thanks to subtle and precise play. However, it is White's astonishing winning plan at the end that makes this game a true pearl.
