Openings #1 The Open Games

Editorial

Dear chess friends,

Which opening suits you?  Unfortunately, many club players make the following mistakes when choosing their opening:

- they follow the prevailing fashions,

- they stick to an opening that they may not even particularly understand, because it is the only opening that they have halfway learnt at some point,

- they only play minor variations, out of fear of their opponent's supposed knowledge.

That doesn't have to be the case! Let yourself be inspired! This opening tutorial offers you a competent and compact introduction to opening theory. We present the essential plans and ideas for all openings in the "Open Games" section. Adrian Mikhalchishin, Lawrence Trent, Lars Schandorff and Valeri Lilov show you in 23 videos what it's all about. In addition, you can play actual games from grandmaster practice, solve typical tactical tasks and, at the end, find out for which type of player we recommend the respective opening.

The first edition of the "Opening Tutorials" was published around 10 years ago. Now we are publishing this series in the new web-based ChessBase book format! With interactive exercises, online analysis options and videos, you will get a new, practical overview of the open games and hopefully come to a well-considered decision to change your repertoire or simply try something new!

We wish you lots of fun and new insights!

PS: The possibilities opened-up by the new ChessBase Book format will become clear to you as you read on.  We describe how the interactive modules work in this short manual
