The Berlin Defence, better known by its current name "The Berlin Wall", is ideal for players who like to exchange queens early and have patience for long endgames. In fact, this is the prerequisite for being able to play the Berlin Defence sensibly. This is because White can force the transition to an endgame. On the other hand, White is not forced to do so, but can build up normally, albeit cautiously. The resulting types of position favour players with patience and experience. Especially at club player level, knowledge of the position is more important than in-depth knowledge of variations.
