Spanish Game - Steinitz Defence - Conclusion

The classical Steinitz Defence promises a firm, solid, but also cramped position with little theoretical effort. If you prefer to take a wait-and-see approach, then the classical Steinitz Defence may be of interest to you.

The modern Steinitz Defence is a solid set-up for Black that can be played without much learning effort. This set-up against Spanish is particularly suitable for beginners to tournament chess. As soon as you have mastered a few basic ideas, you can play this set-up well. The actual confrontation then often takes place in the middlegame. Here, Black has the option of choosing between sharp, tactically emphasised or more relaxed variations.

White should not underestimate the Steinitz Defence and should have an answer ready. Then you will get an active position that offers chances for more. Without any knowledge, however, the Steinitz Defence is a minefield for White.
