Two Knights Defence with 4.d4 - Conclusion

In the Two Knights Defence (or Two Knights Game) with 4.d4, the centre is opened early, and the pieces immediately enter into direct close combat. This initially means that concrete and reliable knowledge of variations is necessary in order to survive in the opening phase. As soon as the initial storm has subsided, a challenging middlegame with asymmetrical pawn structures often develops, giving both sides the opportunity to show their skills.

With White, you can use this opening to check whether your opponent has done their homework. If so, you are in for an interesting game of chess. If not, you have a good chance of scoring a quick point. If you allow this opening variation as Black, you should know what you are doing.

This opening variation favours players who have solid theoretical knowledge. The Two Knights Defence is very risky as an opening for beginners (Italian with 3...Bc5 is more suitable here) but offers advanced players the chance to show off their theoretical knowledge and chess skills.
