The evaluation function is one of the most important building blocks of a chess engine. The end positions resulting from the search are examined using the evaluation function. The most important criterion is almost always the material balance on the board.

Example

Further positional criteria such as open files, mobility, pawn structure, centralisation, etc. also enter into the evaluation.
